I'm a University Lecturer in English and the author of a novel, The Secret of Hurricanes (MacAdam/Cage 2002). My life is summed up by Rumi, who said: "My story gets told in various ways: a romance, a dirty joke, a war, a vacancy." Rumi's quote is the epigraph to Hurricanes. The purpose of this journal is to explore creativity and the writing life.

Dark Patches
It is not upon you alone the dark patches fall, The dark threw its patches down upon me also, The Best I had done seem'd to me blank and suspicious, My great thoughts as I supposed them, were they not in reality meagre?
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before. Edgar Allan Poe
The capacity of the human mind to forget can be an extraordinary survival mechanism. But still, it serves us to remember, no matter how deep the darkness. Sheer will and the power of the imagination help to navigate muddy waters.
Thanks much for this.
